Our Journey Through the Seasons
28th December 2023Welcoming Ross: Our Newest Arboriculturist
20th May 2024A Tribute to Dr. David Lonsdale
It is very sad to hear of the death of Dr. David Lonsdale, who passed away on 9th April 2024. Undoubtedly, he stood as the preeminent tree expert in the UK, serving as an inspiration to myself and countless others within the profession.
His seminal work, “Principles of Tree Hazard Assessment and Management,” published in 1999, established the gold standard in tree risk assessment and management for decades to come. It was the first professional arboriculture book I purchased 25 years ago, and remains a trusted reference to this day. Similarly, “Ancient and other Veteran Trees,” edited by David Lonsdale and published in 2013, continues to set the benchmark for safeguarding these invaluable natural assets.
Across his extensive body of publications, Dr. Lonsdale’s writing consistently impressed me with its clarity and ability to unravel complex topics. I’ve perpetually aspired, albeit in vain, to emulate his knack for making intricate issues understandable in my own reports.
Involved in numerous high-profile tree-related expert witness cases over the past few decades, Dr. Lonsdale approached his work with thoughtfulness and balance. With this experience he offered invaluable guidance, essential for any tree inspector.
The few occasions I had the privilege to hear Dr. Lonsdale speak left a lasting impact. I recall a sold-out seminar in 2019, where the audience spontaneously rose to their feet in applause before having even spoken —an apt testament to the respect he inspired.
In an industry that has more than its fair share of braggarts, David Lonsdale always appeared modest and reserved, despite a legacy in professional arboriculture that surpasses that of many others.
